We booked a stay in Fanny Bay, Vancouver Island with Trip Vacation Rentals in August of 2024. The only good thing about it is that we booked through Airbnb and they made sure Trip had to refund us in full.
The house looked older than we expected from the pictures, but it was still beautiful and right on the ocean. We were really happy upon check-in.
When supper time came around (we bought a bunch of stuff to BBQ) we started looking for the BBQ mentioned in the description. It was stored under the deck and hiding a dirty surprise for me. At this point I was still okay with it, I could just burn it off… except all the propane bottles scattered around the place were empty. „That’s okay, I’ll just message the host!“ …
Until I hear from Matt I went looking for something else to make our meat in. I found an electric grill in the kitchen cupboard but it was missing its cord. This had me starting looking through the kitchen and I started realizing how disgusting the whole kitchen really is. The cupboards were dirty and so were the pots and pans. Some of them didn’t look like they had been washed at all since their last use. I found one really gross in in the cupboard next to the washing machine and dryer, not sure why it was there in the first place.
Then I stepped on an oyster (doesn’t it say in the ad that you’re not allowed to take them from the beach) in the living room and kicked it under the couch. Oh no, now I’ve gone down to my knees to pick it up and saw everything that was going on down there! The unit got more disgusting everywhere I looked. I started noticing everything now. There was a guest book in the living room and the last 4 guests have pointed out all these things and more. There were live-wire hanging out of the wall in the living room. The downstairs bedroom doesn’t have windows. All of this is dangerous and illegal.
I contacted Airbnb and sent all my pictures to the host. This is unacceptable. We’re checking out in the morning and we’re getting our money back.

Before we went to bed we washed all the duvet covers, but we should’ve washed all the sheets. The biggest surprise was when we stripped all the beds in the morning before leaving, so that the cleaning personal couldn’t just make the bed as is and had to wash them.. we stripped 5 (!) fitted sheets off the queen bed downstairs that were hiding the worst mold smell I’ve ever smelt!
The whole unit was a disaster and clearly Trip Vacation Rentals had not cleaned it properly in at least the last 5 stays. Or even tried.. I guess you just put one fitted sheet over top at a time…

Now Matt the host messaged me on Airbnb to take my 2 star review down, that is common courtesy when you get a refund.
Well Matt… I guess you’re lucky I didn’t write this whole story on Airbnb. If you want good reviews only , you’ll have to start providing good service only. 😉 if it didn’t take you 4 hours to reply when a guest asks for a new bottle of propane and a brush because they want to clean YOUR BBQ, because maybe the cleaners genuinely forgot it.. it may have never come this far.

Trip Vacation Rentals was AMAZING. We stayed in Comox Valley and had the best experience. The pictures do not do the house and view justice. The host was readily available and answered any questions we had. P.s the beds were amazing and you will not want to leave! Would give more stars if I could! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
