La Ducrie is a simply magical place! The castle is full of history and unique nooks and crannies, and the property is beautiful. But what makes it so special are the owners, Joe and Vivienne (and of course, their dogs, Lottie and Ghost!). They welcome you into their home with a warmth and graciousness that was highly unexpected at a B&B, and made for a very enjoyable stay. Joe's knowledge of the history and stories of D-Day and the surrounding area is quite impressive, and he tells his stories with an entertaining Scottish wit sure to make you smile. Vivienne is simply lovely, and her cooking is outstanding. My husband and I and our two teenage children enjoyed two dinners with them that were just fantastic and accompanied by great conversation. I don't think we have ever eaten so much delicious food in one sitting! I would be remiss not to mention Pavel, their on-site staffer who is sweet and very helpful. You will not be disappointed if you stay at La Ducrie - we were sad to leave our new friends. We only hope the wind will take us to Normandy again!

Have you ever wanted to live in a castle and be treated like royalty? We really recommend this beautiful place. The hostess Vivienne in a fantastic cook. Instead of driving out you can get a fabulous meal there. The setting is beautiful. Flowers and even a real moat ..... Joe the host is a WW2 expert. He conducts tours that takes you to sights, museums, beaches, and sites that were actually buried away. We are so much richer going on this tour with this sweet and patriotic man. The American graves were humbling to see. La Ducrie was our favorite place on our two month vacation. We loved Vivienne and Joe .... Please go there. It will enrich your life. Happy Travels.

What better way is there to learn about the Normandy campaign than to discuss it over coffee, croissants and ham at a Norman castle overlooking a moat? It is the best history class I have ever had. ||||Upon our arrival at 8:30 p.m., the owners, Joe and Vivienne, welcomed the three of us as if we were old friends. They had drinks waiting for us after our long day with a delightful conversation to get acquainted. We were given a tour of their beautiful home and our rooms. They were spacious and comfortable at just the right temperature. I got my best sleep of the trip there. ||||The next morning, Joe invited me to accompany him to the market for fresh bread. Along the way he explained the some of the history of the area. On our return, the conversation continued as he prepared breakfast. During breakfast he went into greater detail of the history of La Ducrie, the area and the Normandy campaign. ||||It was a wonderful experience for me and my friends, all of us students of history. My only regret is that I did not arrange for Joe to be our tour guide, and have a meal cooked by Vivienne. Hopefully, I can return next year to do that. ||||A memorable experience, but one night is not enough.

Superlative. Joe and Viv offer four star accommodations in a knights and maidens setting including exquisite food, cordial friendly service in a royal lodge replete with its own moat, secret chambers, and friendly dogs. We could not have wished for a better setting for our first anniversary/ honeymoon. Viv and Joe rolled out the red carpet and made our special time very special indeed. Joe’s learned tour of the local area and D-Day battlefields (including conspiracy-laden theories!), was completed by deeply moving visits to the German and American cemeteries. That perfect day was capped by Viv’s professionally prepared meal and homemade cake to celebrate our anniversary. Magnifique! Joe and Viv are convivial hosts, both sweet and entertaining. The visit was made all the more delightful by the friendly hounds of the manor, Ghost and Lottie. ||||The lodge is a site worthy of visit as a tourist attraction all on its own. Towers, arrow slits, quirky door sizes, foot-thick millennium-old stone walls and all, made comfortable by tasteful modern conveniences. Sadly, the building deserves but lacks a haunting spirit. That is, unless the spirits in residence radiate good will. So long as Joe and Viv are innkeepers there, we will hope to return.

Highly recommend. Interesting and unique stay. We over-nighted here on our way from the Normandy beaches to Mont St Michel. Castle and and accommodations are just as pictured. Rooms are clean and large, and the beds are great. It is a castle so the rooms are oddly arranged and you have to watch your head. The hosts are very friendly and helpful.
